Kedah’s environment department receives 142 open burning complaints in under three months, intensifying patrols and legal action amid a severe dry spell

ALOR SETAR: The Kedah Department of Environment (DOE) has recorded 142 complaints about open burning from January 1 to March 22. This figure indicates a rising trend in such activities across the state.

State director Sharifah Zakiah Syed Sahab warned the actual number of incidents is likely far higher. Many cases go unreported to the department.

“This situation is deeply concerning, given the current dry spell,” she said in a statement. She explained that fires can spread easily and become uncontrollable, a risk worsened by diminishing water sources.

She stated that uncontrolled open burning poses severe air pollution and community safety hazards. To address the issue, the state DOE has intensified field monitoring.

The department conducted 109 enforcement patrols during the same period. Patrols will continue throughout the upcoming festive season.

Kedah DOE is working closely with the Fire and Rescue Department to identify high-risk areas. This measure aims to detect fire sources at an early stage.

High-risk zones include waste disposal sites, agricultural land, and residential areas. The patrols also serve to raise public awareness and issue direct warnings.

Sharifah Zakiah said the department would not compromise with any offender. Legal action is being pursued against several open burning cases.

One case involves an illegal dumpsite in Baling. Open burning is a serious offence under Section 29A of the Environmental Quality Act 1974.

All residents are urged to cease any waste burning activities immediately. This is to avoid legal action and risks to air quality and public safety.

The public can provide information via the toll-free line 1-800-88-2727. Reports can also be made online through the DOE e-Aduan portal.
