Russian overnight attacks on Ukraine fell slightly in December

Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine decreased in December, but strikes on energy infrastructure caused widespread power outages.

KYIV: Russian overnight drone and missile attacks on Ukraine decreased slightly in December, according to an analysis of Ukrainian air force data.

Russia launched at least 5,134 drones in overnight attacks during the final month of 2025, a 6% decrease from November.

The number of missiles fired fell by 18% over the same period.

However, Ukraine’s interception rate for the total sum of missiles and drones also dipped to 80% in December, down from 82% the previous month.

Despite the overall decrease, strikes on energy infrastructure left hundreds of thousands of people without power.

Ukraine faced intense military pressure throughout 2025 from both relentless bombardment and battlefield losses.

Moscow has conducted nightly drone attacks since May 10, following the end of a unilateral three-day truce announced by President Vladimir Putin.

The Kremlin denies deliberately targeting civilians.

US President Donald Trump has engaged in talks with both sides in an effort to end the conflict.

Trump has so far failed to secure major concessions from Russia, which occupies approximately one-fifth of Ukraine.

Kyiv accuses Moscow of sabotaging diplomatic efforts to seize more territory, asserting that Russia is not interested in a genuine peace.
