PETALING JAYA: Kedahan Lam Kong Foo came out on top in the recently concluded Astro Masters 2019 Grand Final in Taipei, after shooting a 72 for a two-day score of 148.
The victory was made sweeter for Lam as he also bagged the novelty category crown, after his drive on Hole 1 was 285 yards.
Lam, 48, had begun on a rather uncharacteristic note after carding a four-over-par 76 due to windy conditions, during the first round at Sunrise Golf & Country Club.
However, in the second round at the Ta Shee Golf & Country Club in Taiwan, Lam did enough to hold off Wong Hong Nung, to claim the title by two shots.
“This win is amazing. I never imagined that one day I would become the Astro Masters Champion Golfer of the Year. I very, very happy!” said Lam.
Lam, a long-time participant of the Astro Masters, having made the Grand Finals in 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2017, won a Panasonic 49” Ultra HD Smart LED TV, a One-Year Tropicana Term membership and the champion’s trophy, which was presented to him by Hew Su Yen, Head of Sales for Astro Malaysia.
He was also presented with an Aldila NV Touring golf shaft for his victory in the novelty category.
Runner-up, Wong, was also crowned the Nett champion after posting a two-day score of 144.
The former professional golfer flew home on Malindo Air with a Srixon Z 585 Driver, one Aldila Quaranta golf shaft and the Nett champion’s trophy.
Meanwhile, Utusan Malaysia’s Imran Mohd Nor emerged champion in the guest category on countback with a two-day total of 139 points.
Sabahan Tan Peng Juan won the ‘nearly-men’ crown of the ‘Sure To Win Nearest-to-Pin’ contest on Hole 7, missing the hole by 75 inches.
The Astro Masters is into its 22nd year of running. The event is renowned for the Grand Final that is traditionally held overseas, travelling to nine countries including Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Oman, China and Cambodia last year.
Eric Foo Hwa Peng was the luckiest of all the golfers when he won the RM6,000 Titoni Grand Lucky Draw prize.
