TERENGGANU survived a late scare to kick off their 42nd Agong Cup campaign with a thrilling 25-24 win over Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur at Padang Astaka, Petaling Jaya.
The East Coast side bounced back strongly after Kuala Lumpur opened the scoring through a penalty by import player Qio Tuilekutu, with Muhammad Faizal Md Tahir replying with a converted try to put Terengganu ahead.
Kuala Lumpur’s energetic display kept the contest evenly matched throughout the first half, but Terengganu held a slim 17-16 advantage at the break after capitalising on key scoring opportunities.
The second half saw both teams locked in a tense battle, with Kuala Lumpur briefly regaining the lead in the closing minutes through a penalty and a try.
However, Terengganu produced a decisive late counterattack, finished off by hooker Danish Rafiqin Abdul Qayyum, to snatch a dramatic one-point victory.
Terengganu will next face Kelantan at home on May 16 in their second Group-stage match.
