Tom Banton’s composed 63 not out guided England to a vital win over Scotland, marking a career resurgence for the batsman after a stop-start international journey.
KOLKATA: Tom Banton delivered a match-winning performance to keep England’s T20 World Cup hopes alive. His unbeaten 63 steered England to a tense victory over Scotland at Eden Gardens.
The innings marked a significant personal milestone for Banton in his first World Cup. It came after low scores in his opening two matches of the tournament.
England’s management had persisted with Banton, encouraging him to adapt as a finisher. He repaid that faith during a must-win chase of 153, entering at 13 for 2.
“I think coming off the back of two low scores, I just wanted to put my hand up and try and get the boys over the line,” Banton told reporters. He admitted to feeling pressure after his previous failures.
“This is my first World Cup and the pressure is definitely different,” he said. Banton credited the team’s unwavering support for helping him through doubts.
His career had stalled after a bright start in 2019, leading to a drop in 2022. Banton admitted he was “hating cricket” upon his return to county side Somerset.
A period of hard work culminated in a domestic T20 Blast-winning campaign in 2023. This resurgence earned him an England recall last year after a three-year absence.
His knock against Scotland showcased a new maturity. He built partnerships of 66 with Jacob Bethell and 46 with Sam Curran, sealing the win with 10 balls remaining.
Gone were the reckless shots of his youth, replaced by measured orthodoxy. He accelerated decisively, hitting three sixes in a 22-run over from Mark Watt.
“It was awesome. I’m good mates with Bants, so it was good to see him have success on the field,” said captain Harry Brook. He praised Banton’s mature chase.
England must now beat Italy on Monday to secure a Super Eights spot. Banton warned against complacency despite Italy’s low ranking.
“You can’t take anyone for granted. It quickly bites you in the arse if you think like that,” he stated. The batsman is clearly relishing his current role.
“Growing up, playing for England is the goal and a dream, and to be at a World Cup with a lot of good friends, I can’t complain,” Banton reflected. He called it the best feeling on the planet.
