Liverpool defender Andy Robertson is considering his future as his contract nears its end, balancing loyalty to the club with his desire for regular first-team football.
LONDON: Liverpool defender Andy Robertson says he is open to discussions over a new contract as his current deal enters its final months.
The 31-year-old Scotland captain has seen his starting role challenged by the summer signing of left-back Milos Kerkez.
Robertson has still made 20 appearances this season but admits his future is a complex issue.
“It’s a difficult question to answer. I’ve got five months left and we need to see the option to stay or if there’s options to go,” said Robertson.
He emphasised his strong relationship with the club’s hierarchy since his £8 million move from Hull City in 2017.
“The relationship is good and it’s not quite ‘what do they need to show me and what do I need to show them’ as we’ve shown each other more than enough respect over the last eight-and-a-half years and we’ll see what comes.”
Despite his reduced role, Robertson’s desire to play remains undiminished.
“I’m a player who wants to play,” he insisted, recalling being left out by former manager Jurgen Klopp.
“I’ve played through injuries, I’ve played when I’ve only been 50, 40, 30 percent fit for this club and my country.”
He added that any player content on the bench does not belong at a top football club.
Robertson, who has won eight major trophies with Liverpool, could have moved to Atletico Madrid last summer.
He stayed aware that the 22-year-old Kerkez might take his place in the team.
