Stan Wawrinka announces 2026 will be his final tennis season

Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka says he will retire after the 2026 season, aiming to finish his career on a high note

THREE-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka has announced the 2026 season will be his last as a professional tennis player.

The Swiss star, who turns 41 in March, made the announcement on social media on Friday.

“Every book needs an ending,” Wawrinka posted.

“It’s time to write the final chapter of my career as a professional tennis player. 2026 will be my last year on tour.”

He stated his aim is to finish his career “on the best note possible”.

Wawrinka won the Australian Open in 2014, the French Open in 2015, and the US Open in 2016.

His major triumphs came during the era dominated by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.

He has claimed 16 career ATP titles, with his last victory coming in Geneva in 2017.

Wawrinka reached a career-high world ranking of third in 2014.

In recent years, he has struggled with injuries and is currently ranked 157th.

His 582 tour-level wins are the fourth most among active players.

That tally places him just behind Frenchman Gael Monfils, who also plans to retire at the end of 2026.

Wawrinka also won Olympic gold in doubles alongside Federer at the 2008 Beijing Games.

He was a key part of the Swiss team that secured its first Davis Cup triumph in 2014.

Wawrinka is scheduled to begin his final season at the United Cup in Perth, starting on January 2. – AFP
