SHUFAYE Wong was all set to go down the road well-travelled, like most university graduates, to a career that would offer financial and professional security.

“At that time, I was not sure if content creation was for me,’’ she said. “I was just doing it for fun, I never really made any money out of it.”

It was only until her friend, Jinny from Jinnyboy TV who spotted her potential and persuaded her to give it a try. Speaking with theSun, the Subang Jaya native attributes her time working for Jinny as a content creator, which led her to pursue a career in streaming.

“Working as a content creator allowed me to pursue streaming at the same time as they both go together very well. So, I started out from there. Two months in, I saved some money and got myself a proper PC. And then I started my twitch streaming journey.”

What is your favourite highlight so far?

The first one would be the time I played with top streamers like Admiral Bulldog and Ding. It was such an honour to be playing with them because they are expert players. The next one would be the bond that I have developed with my community.

Last year, during my birthday, my viewers surprised me by presenting an E birthday PowerPoint slide. They all signed their names and wrote their messages on the PowerPoint. It made me cry because it was one of the most special things that my community has done for me. Yeah, I will never forget that.

How do you usually pick the games to stream?

I usually pick the games that I feel interest me. I think Dota, I stream very frequently. And Valorant also. So these two are the ones that I stream the most. But if there is indie games or variety games that catch my eye, I would give it a try. Like recently I have been playing It Takes Two. It is a co-op game. It is pretty fun. So yeah, I think overall, I just pick the games that interest me.

What is your favourite game of all time?

I guess Dota because it was what I started out with. Now I have been playing a lot of Valorant because it is like the first FPS game that I really commit myself to. I put a lot of time into it. And I actually also spent a lot of money on the game.

Do you feel the online community can get aggressive sometimes?

I think the better word here is probably toxic. More than aggressive. There are toxic people in the online community, that is given. I think it is more evident in competitive games like Dota, Mobile Legends, and Overwatch. And I used to mind it a lot back then when I received a lot of toxicity. But over time as I play more, I learn to ignore it. You just have to deal with it as it comes with the game territory.

Were the unfavourable remarks reflective of the stereotype of female gamers?

Definitely! Many always assume female players to be terrible. Early on, I used to mind it a lot. Though it still bothers me from time to time, I have learned to use it as a form of motivation to become a better player. Like if someone were to say I am bad at something in a mean way, at least I know what to improve on.

I will ask my friends for their advice on how I can be better. I have learned to take it as a lesson whenever I get these comments. Ultimately I do not think it is about gender. I have seen female players who play very well. So, ultimately it boils down to the individual’s skill as a player.

What do you enjoy doing outside gaming?

I think content creation is one that I really like. I am doing this full time. Apart from that, I enjoy learning new stuff. Recently I picked up Japanese. I have been committing at least an hour or two every day to study Japanese. Other than that, I really enjoy watching shows and Japanese anime.

What are your plans for the future?

I hope to continue streaming as long as there are people who would like to watch me play my games. I also plan to continue with content creation. But I think one goal that I have as a streamer is to be a part of the talent roster for a major company like Valve for an official event. That is my main goal.

Hopefully one day, I will get there. But yeah, for now, I am focusing on my streaming.
