A TikTok page recently shared their surprise upon discovering a laundromat in Malaysia with Muslim and non-Muslim washers and dryers.
@sunmoon4view posted the 11-second video which showed signages categorising each machine either for Muslim use or for non-Muslim use.
In the video, they wrote, “Oh no, what has happened to Malaysia? Even washing machines have Muslim and non-Muslim signages.
“What is this? Were these orders from JAKIM? Maybe in the future, we will have Muslim bank notes and non-Muslim bank notes.”
In the video, there appears to be only one non-Muslim washing machine while there were multiple Muslim washing machines and dryers.
Netizens were divided in their opinion.
A few praised the laundromat, saying that there could be non-Muslims who wash their clothes that had their dog fur on it and the Muslims could wash their clothes without worry.
While many other netizens condemned the concept, pointing out that with money and blood donations, there was no such thing as racial divide.
This specially catered laundromat is not the first of its kind in Malaysia. Back in 2017, a self-service laundromat in Johor which catered only to Muslim patrons, sparked controversy on social media.
The operator of that laundromat has since stopped the practice after an outcry across the country and after Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar ordered the laundromat to stop its discriminatory practice.
