PETALING JAYA: Malaysian drummer and percussionist extraordinaire Lewis Pragasam has passed away at the age of 66.

According to an announcement on his Facebook fan page, he died at 3am today at a private hospital.

Lewis has garnered international critical acclaim as one of Asia’s leading percussionists and an innovator of new trends in music.

He founded the groundbreaking Asiabeat project in 1979, which has since become a legendary name in the music world for its unique blend of musical styles.

The veteran musician was also into making drums using environmentally-friendly materials.

In an interview with theSun in 2020, Lewis admitted he was often asked what motivated him to continue pursuing music.

“Ever since I was young, I love what I do so much. I love people.

“I believe I’ve been brought to the word to share my talents, my love for people.

“Everything that I’ve done in my life, I’ve done on my own.

“Why? Because I have the vision for it.
