Penang has channelled over RM141 million to Chinese and mission schools since 2009 for critical repairs and modern learning facilities, ensuring a safe and conducive environment.
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state government has allocated a total of RM141.89 million to Chinese and mission schools from 2009 to 2025.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the proactive initiative aims to improve educational facilities, even though education falls under federal jurisdiction.
“This year, the state government allocated over RM8 million for Chinese and mission schools,” he told reporters after a mock cheque presentation at Komtar.
He stated the funding began in 2009 to assist with critical repair works affecting student and educator safety.
The allocation covers repairs for damaged roofs, outdated wiring, dilapidated toilets, and other urgent facilities.
Chow noted that after 17 years, significant improvements in the schools’ physical condition are evident.
In recent years, the state has also started considering applications for modern learning tools.
This includes funding for computers, smart boards, and innovation labs in line with digitalisation.
For 2026, RM845,000 was approved for 16 mission schools after a thorough evaluation process.
The Chinese and Mission Schools Affairs Coordination Committee conducted site visits to assess priorities.
Of this amount, RM525,000 (62.3%) is for infrastructure repair and upgrading works.
A further RM285,000 was approved for installing smartboards in mission schools.
Chow emphasised such efforts are vital for a safe, comfortable, and conducive learning environment.
He reiterated the state’s commitment to protecting the welfare of school staff and students.
