Category Two and Three alerts issued as northeast monsoon brings hazardous marine conditions

PETALING JAYA: Strong northeast monsoon winds and rough seas are expected to affect several Malaysian waters and surrounding seas from tomorrow until Feb 21, with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) warning of hazardous marine conditions.

In a statement today, MetMalaysia said strong northeast winds of 40–50 km/h with waves up to 3.5 metres are forecast off Johor East, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan and East Sabah during the period.

The department also issued a Category Two warning for surrounding waters, including areas such as Tioman and Layang-Layang, where winds of 50–60 km/h and waves reaching up to 4.5 metres are expected.

Meanwhile, a Category Three alert has also been triggered in parts of the South China Sea.

“Strong northeast winds exceeding 60 km/h with waves higher than 4.5 metres are expected over the waters of Condore, northwest Bunguran and northwest Reef North until Saturday, Feb 21, 2026.”

MetMalaysia said the strong winds and rough seas are dangerous to shipping and coastal activities, including offshore operations, fishing, ferry services and small-boat movements.
