Malaysia’s government condemns a Quran desecration video on Threads, with a student detained and an investigation launched under communications laws.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has strongly condemned an individual who uploaded content showing the desecration and stepping on the Quran on the social media platform Threads.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil described the act as crude, insulting to Islam and a provocation against the sensitivities of Malaysia’s multiracial society.

“I have directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to carry out an immediate investigation and take action under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he said in a Facebook post.

Fahmi added that the MCMC would coordinate with the Royal Malaysia Police to ensure comprehensive action under existing laws.

“Any act that touches on religious sensitivities and threatens public order is truly unacceptable,” he said.

Pahang Police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman confirmed a Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah student has been detained on suspicion of uploading the content.

The suspect is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir assured the matter would be resolved swiftly, noting the incident caused concern during Ramadan.

He urged the public to remain calm and refrain from taking any action against the student.

“Such discourteous acts must be addressed immediately,” said Zambry.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan stressed the department viewed the incident seriously and was monitoring developments.

“All parties are urged to preserve the harmony we have built over the years,” he said in a statement.
