Top performers enter prestigious universities

Eight Sunway College A-Level students gain entry to Oxford and Cambridge, highlighting the programme’s success in nurturing globally competitive scholars.

THE entry of eight Sunway students into Oxford and Cambridge university in the UK, from the A-level programme, reflects the team work of both students and lecturers to achieve the necessary grades.

Sunway’s A-level programme, established since 1994, is designed to develop high school leavers to be effective learners and academically strong thinkers. The record high numbers accepted into not only Oxford, Cambridge but Harvard, MIT in the US, and countless other top universities reflect the success of the programme.

Ruth Cheah, director of programme, at Cambridge GCE A-level said: “Our consistent track record and excellent results are testimony to what students experience here. This confirms our excellent delivery system, consistent academic performance and attainment of Cambridge Top in the World Awards.”

The wide range of subjects include biology, chemistry, mathematics, further mathematics, economics, psychology, law, literature in english, history and computer science, offer Sunway students an opportunity to spread their skills and choose their specialty.

Daniel Abraham George, Liong Ka Lun, and Vijay Arrendra Vijendren received offers from the University of Oxford, while Chuah Jia Herng, Eleanor Eng Yee Hui, Oscar Yu Yang Xin, Kai Lee Synn Wei, and Keane Wong were offered places at the University of Cambridge.

While Daniel and Kai pursue law, Liong has been accepted for philosophy, politics and law, with Vijay taking up biochemistry. Chuah is accepted for mathematics, with Eleanor taking up economics, and Yu and Wong, both accepted for engineering.

For Liong, being offered a place at Oxford, success is not simply about gaining entry into the world’s leading universities. It is about returning one day to bridge educational gaps in his home state of Sabah and empowering future generations to thrive at home.

“His aim of widening access to education reflects the spirit of ambition that defines his generation, students who dream boldly and consistently meet some of the world’s most demanding academic standards.

“For these students and many young Malaysians like them, representing the nation on the global stage is both a privilege and a responsibility,” added Cheah.

“If I study at Cambridge, I hope to represent Malaysian culture through everyday interactions and academic excellence. Malaysia’s multicultural identity can be shared naturally through conversations, food and student activities, helping others understand the country beyond stereotypes,” said Yu.

“I want others to see that Malaysian students are resilient, capable, and intellectually driven, and that diversity is one of our greatest strengths,” Wong shared on his placement at Cambridge.

For all of them, the Sunway College experience played an important role in their personal and academic growth.

“My time at Sunway College truly broadened my horizons, as it was my first experience living in a major city. The exposure to diverse perspectives helped me become more adaptable and confident. The college’s holistic approach to education strengthened my resilience and independence, qualities I will carry forward,” added Chuah.

Daniel George shared that close engagement with his lecturers helped deepen his understanding of his subjects. This strengthened the analytical skills he applied during his Oxford interview and allowed him to pursue academic interests beyond the syllabus.

Students like Eleanor Eng and Vijay Arrendra are actively exploring scholarship opportunities to support their studies, including funding options offered by the university as well as assistance from Malaysian government and private organisations.

All of them look forward to studying in the UK.
