Malaysia and the Philippines pledge sustained engagement on energy security, clarifying a recent diesel transaction as commercial, not governmental.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and the Philippines have agreed on the importance of continuous communication to address energy security issues.

Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said this commitment was affirmed during an online bilateral meeting with Philippine Department of Energy Secretary Sharon S Garin.

A key topic was the clarification of a recent diesel-related transaction conducted by the Philippines.

Akmal Nasrullah stated this was a commercial transaction between companies and did not involve any government-to-government agreement.

“This clarification is important to avoid misunderstandings, maintain good bilateral relations and ensure clear understanding among stakeholders, especially in the challenging global energy market situation,” he said.

He added that both parties expressed commitment to continuing to support the spirit of ASEAN cooperation amid current global uncertainties.

The meeting follows a denial by Malaysia’s National Economic Action Council crisis management team regarding a Philippine media report.

That report had claimed Malaysia sent 329,000 barrels of diesel to the Philippines.
