ATHENS: Police in Greece’s capital Athens on Tuesday were searching for an 89-year-old man suspected of injuring four people in shootings reportedly sparked by problems with his pension payments.
One man and three women were lightly injured as a result of the shootings, with a fourth woman in shock, news reports said.
State news agency ANA said the man, described as a scrap dealer, had initially shot in the leg an employee of the state pension organisation EFKA in central Athens.
He then fired his weapon at a court office several blocks away, lightly injured another three women working there and leaving a fourth in shock, ANA said.
“I saw the whole thing…he was firing at the ground,” an eyewitness told state TV ERT.
News reports said the man, who had been treated at a mental hospital a few years earlier, left a shotgun at the second scene, and letters complaining at not being able to get a pension.
Athens court staff announced a 24-hour strike on Wednesday in protest at the incident, which they blamed on poor security at court buildings.
