Perlis KPDN detains a 32-year-old eatery assistant for attempting to smuggle 840 litres of petrol to Thailand worth RM1,932.
KANGAR: The Perlis branch of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has detained an eatery assistant suspected of attempting to smuggle 840 litres of petrol to Thailand, worth an estimated RM1,932, last night.
Its director Rohaida Hassan said the 32-year-old man was picked up at about 8 pm during Ops Tiris 4.0 carried out together with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) at the Kuala Perlis Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) jetty here.
“Further inspection at the jetty led to the discovery of 28 jerry cans containing liquid believed to be petrol, as well as a motorcycle with a local registration number, which was believed to have been used to transport the petrol to the location,” she told a press conference here today.
Rohaida said further checks found that the man did not possess any authorisation letter, licence or permit to store controlled goods issued by the Controller of Supplies.
“This case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961. The man is believed to have been involved in the activity for the past two months, while the petrol-filled containers were allegedly stored in a storeroom at the jetty before being smuggled to the neighbouring country,” she said.
She added that the suspect was believed to have been selling the petrol at twice the subsidised price he had purchased it for from nearby areas.
Meanwhile, she said 18 cases were investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 in Perlis so far this year, with total seizures valued at RM322,587.
