The Communications Ministry explains why users can have full mobile signal bars but no internet, citing congestion, cable theft and network failures.

PETALING JAYA: Mobile users may experience a loss of internet connectivity despite having full signal bars due to factors such as heavy data traffic, cable theft and wildlife-related disruptions, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said service quality could be affected by various issues, including network congestion, transmission link failures, fibre optic cable cuts, natural disasters and vandalism.

“Users’ device settings, hardware conditions and data quota limitations could also contribute to poor connectivity,” she added.

Teo was responding to Datuk Anyi Ngau (GPS-Baram), who asked the Communications Ministry to state the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) comprehensive plan to resolve core network failures that have caused users to face situations where phone signals appear strong but internet services remain inaccessible.

She said MCMC and telecommunications providers were continuously strengthening infrastructure through the National Digital Network Plan (Jendela).

“Service providers have introduced measures such as network redundancy, alternative routing systems and 24-hour monitoring to reduce disruptions and avoid single points of failure.

“Additional safeguards, including the installation of steel trunking to protect copper cables at high-risk sites, have also been implemented to prevent theft and vandalism,” she said.

Teo also encouraged the public to submit complaints and feedback through the MCMC Nexus application and MCMC’s complaints portal to help identify connectivity issues and support further improvements.
