A local eatery sparks online backlash over lack of effort in AI-generated food images, leaving netizens feeling disturbed at the sight.
WITH artificial intelligence (AI) becoming increasingly integrated into daily life, several businesses in Malaysia—particularly eateries—have adopted the technology to generate product descriptions and images.
As AI makes it easier for eateries to create images of their food and beverage offerings, some of these visuals have left much to be desired. A wave of online criticism has recently emerged, with some establishments being criticised for using AI in what many perceive to be a lack of effort.
A local fried chicken chain came under fire on Threads after AI-generated images of its food products went viral. The images were described as “creepy” due to the bumpy texture rendered on the food.
“Please, you’re not running a roadside stall. Can’t you use a proper photo?
“I feel so triggered looking at this. Throughout the entire ordering process, I couldn’t even look at the menu because it was so disgusting!” the viral post read.
While many were not entirely opposed to the eatery using AI, users said the chain should put more effort into creating promotional graphics for its food.
Some commenters said the images triggered trypophobia—a condition that causes intense discomfort, disgust or distress when viewing repetitive patterns, clusters or bumps.
“We are so tired of seeing posters, banners and advertisements that use AI. The overly bright and exaggerated colours are really unpleasant to look at, and the images… seriously, please,” one user said.
“I agree. With those weird bumps all over the picture, I would immediately leave the shop if I saw food images like this. It’s really disgusting,” another commenter wrote.
“The hair on my arms literally stood up. I got goosebumps,” said another.
