Ivory Coast recall Wilfried Zaha for Africa Cup of Nations title defence

Defending champions Ivory Coast have recalled veteran winger Wilfried Zaha to their squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco

JOHANNESBURG: Defending champions Ivory Coast have recalled veteran winger Wilfried Zaha for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The 33-year-old former Crystal Palace player was included in a 26-man squad announced by coach Emerse Fae.

Zaha, who now plays for Major League Soccer club Charlotte, was excluded from the Elephants squad that won the 2024 tournament on home soil.

“We need experienced players,” Fae said while announcing the squad on Ivorian television.

“In the case of Zaha, his ability to beat defenders and his current form worked in his favour.”

Zaha was capped twice by England before switching his international allegiance to Ivory Coast.

Slovenia-based midfielder Jean-Michael Seri has also been recalled after a lengthy injury absence.

Manchester United winger Amad Diallo is one of four Premier League players selected for the title defence.

Sunderland winger Simon Adingra, part of the 2024 winning squad, failed to make the cut.

“Simon is struggling to earn a starting spot at Sunderland and we will have to do without his qualities,” said Fae.

Ivory Coast will face Mozambique, Cameroon and Gabon in Group F at the tournament.

The Elephants are seeking a fourth AFCON title after previous wins in 1992, 2015 and 2024. – AFP
