Police confirm the Nilai IED explosion was an isolated incident with no links to extremism or organised crime, as suspect remains hospitalised.
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have found no links to extremism in last week’s explosion believed to have been caused by an improvised explosive device in Nilai.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar (pic) said the incident appears to be an isolated case, unconnected to any criminal networks or organised groups.
“While the investigation continues, it seems to be an isolated incident,” he told a press conference at Bukit Aman police headquarters.
He added that investigations are focused on determining the purpose of the seized explosive materials and any potential targets.
The suspect’s background is still under investigation, with efforts to record his statement dependent on his health as he receives hospital treatment.
The 62-year-old suspect has been remanded until Jan 3 to assist with investigations.
Police stressed the need for time to complete their inquiry, cautioning that premature statements could jeopardise the case.
Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the suspect was found in a weakened state with burn injuries after allegedly hiding in a forest.
He was located following a public tip-off and arrested along with a motorcycle and several homemade explosive devices.
The suspect is being treated at Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital in Seremban, with his health delaying the police statement.
The case is being investigated under Sections 307 and 435 of the Penal Code and Section 4 of the Corrosive, Explosive, and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
The explosion occurred in the early hours of Dec 22 when the suspect reportedly triggered the blast while moving a device inside a vehicle before fleeing.
