KLIA T1 to streamline customs checks for departing travellers

From January 1, departing passenger customs checks at KLIA Terminal 1 will be consolidated at departure gates to reduce congestion and improve flow.

SEPANG: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department’s inspection for departing travellers will be consolidated at the departure gates of KLIA Terminal 1 starting January 1.

Currently, customs inspections using Departure Screening scanners occur in the departure zone after Immigration clearance.

This layout has the potential to cause congestion during peak travel periods.

The Ministry of Transport stated this new initiative will allow passengers to experience a smoother flow of movement before boarding their flights.

It is expected to reduce congestion and waiting times in the departure zone.

“This improvement is implemented through close cooperation between the MOT, JKDM, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, and the Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency,” the ministry said.

The MOT emphasised that the step does not compromise security levels or customs enforcement.

It stated that inspection of passengers and goods will continue to be strengthened through operational coordination.

The enhancement is expected to improve the passenger experience and accelerate the boarding process.

It aims to ensure KLIA T1 operations run more efficiently, safely, and in an organised manner.

The ministry added that the move aligns with international airport best practices.

However, it stressed that any attempt to take out goods that violate the law will still face stern action.
