Reddit users share how long it takes to heal from heartbreak and find love again, stressing no fixed recovery timeline

RECOVERING from a failed relationship requires time, emotional resilience and, frequently, a complete redefinition of personal happiness.

While society often measures loyalty by how long an individual remains single following a breakup, many argue that healing does not follow a fixed or predictable timeline.

A recent discussion on Reddit explored the complexities of overcoming heartbreak and the transition back into the dating world.

The conversation was initiated by a user currently focused on self-improvement, who sought advice on how long recovery typically takes and how others navigate meeting new partners after a painful split.

“I have been keeping myself busy with the gym, travelling, work, and trying new experiences.

“Overall, I feel like I am growing, but sometimes I do miss having someone close to me,” the user wrote.

The sentiment resonated with many, including a 24-year-old who ended a relationship two years ago.

He admitted that he continues to struggle with trust, despite efforts to meet new people.

“Getting close to another person is not working out so far, so I have partly given up and am just waiting for an opportunity while continuing to improve myself,” he said.

Other contributors reflected on much longer journeys toward recovery. One user shared that it took him seven years to meet his wife after a significant breakup.

During those years, he prioritised his health, fitness and hobbies.

“It worked out well because I met someone who had gone through a similar process. We were two independent individuals who chose to build a life together,” he said, adding that they now share a lifestyle built on mutual interests in travel and fitness.

Another happily married contributor emphasised that there is no “acceptable” timeframe for moving on.

He recounted how his former partner entered a new relationship just three months after their four-year bond ended, a poignant reminder that everyone processes grief at a different pace.

“It’s about accepting that being ready means being willing to try again, despite the risk of getting hurt,” he said.

He eventually met his wife via a dating app, though he initially hesitated to pursue the relationship seriously while still focusing on personal growth.

“Despite everything, she was always there to talk. I did not even realise how often we were speaking while I was still figuring things out.

“We both had the same fears about not being ready, but we chose to try together,” he said.
