A Malaysian woman has sparked conversation online after sharing why she no longer plans to give duit raya during Hari Raya visits.
In a post on Threads, she recalled an incident from last year that left a lasting impression.
“Last year, I overheard my cousin’s wife saying ‘Only RM5?’ when she opened the envelope I gave her 6-year-old child,” she wrote.
The comment, though made in passing, clearly struck a nerve.
This year, she has decided to take a different approach.
“I’ve made up my mind not to give duit Raya anymore. I’ll just come over, eat, and go home. Simple,” she added.
Her post quickly resonated with others, many of whom shared similar experiences in the comments section.
One user recounted giving RM10 to children, only to be met with a blunt response.
“‘Only RM10?’ the kid whispered to me. I told them, ‘Yeah, why? Do you want RM1 instead?’ That shut them up straight away,” the user said.
Another shared a more awkward situation involving a mix-up.
“I once accidentally gave an empty envelope to one of my friend’s five kids. When they got into the car, the father rolled down the window and shouted, ‘You gave an empty envelope!’” they said.
