Netizens clash over VIP escorts as 13-second clip shows motorcade sweeping through traffic

Police escort convoy video reignites debate over VIP lane use and fairness on Malaysian roads amid traffic congestion

A 13-second video featuring a police-escorted convoy navigating through heavy traffic has reignited a heated online discussion regarding VIP road privileges and the perception of public inequality.

The controversy was triggered by a post from user @waynepbmmalaysia, which highlighted the starkly different experiences of motorists on the same stretch of road. The post’s caption pointedly noted: “Taxpayer: stuck in traffic. VIP escort: full lane cleared. Same road… different experience.”

The footage showed a four-vehicle motorcade merging from the left and immediately occupying the right lane with sirens blaring.

As other motorists slow down to yield, the convoy, led by a marked white Proton X50 police escort car, proceeds unimpeded.

The middle of the convoy consists of a black Maxus Mifa 9 and a silver Toyota Camry XV70, followed by a black Toyota Camry XV80 at the rear. While the exact location remains unverified, the recording was taken from a vehicle positioned directly behind the passing motorcade.

The clip quickly became a focal point for debate, with netizens clashing over whether such escorts are a necessity or an abuse of power.

Thread user @kamarulzarkasi argued that similar protocols exist globally, though acknowledged that nations like Switzerland and those in Scandinavia maintain significantly higher tax rates compared to Malaysia’s relatively lower levels.

Expressing common frustration, user @yonglisiew said that while they yield quickly for ambulances, their cooperation with VIP escorts depends entirely on their “mood,” reflecting a growing resentment toward the road hierarchy.

@tabibjiwa suggested that the individuals being escorted might be key policymakers whose schedules directly affect national decisions, such as fuel pricing and urged for more patience from the public.

Many users questioned the efficiency and necessity of the current system. User @maturefoodsco observed that despite the use of outriders, officials frequently arrive late to functions, casting doubt on the practical benefits of lane clearances.

Broadening the scope of the critique, user @djdruofficial argued that escort services should be strictly reserved for essential figures, such as royalty, the Prime Minister and emergency responders. They suggested that other public servants should manage their schedules like the citizens who fund their salaries.

Echoing this sentiment, @daphfinitely stated that road priority should always favour ambulances over individuals, particularly during peak commuting hours.

Amidst the criticism, @obentoasa provided a different context, relaying an explanation from a policeman that convoys are not always for VIPs; they can involve the transport of detainees or other urgent security matters. They cautioned against judging without full context, even while admitting that the “optics” often look like unearned privilege.
