‘Sardine is my new source of protein as a broke guy’

A Reddit user shares how canned sardines and plant-based options can help meet protein needs on a tight budget

STAYING well-nourished while being short on cash may sound challenging, but a local man has shared practical advice on Reddit for eating healthily on a tight budget.

In his post, the man said he discovered an affordable source of protein despite facing financial difficulties.

A 425g can of sardines in tomato sauce, priced at RM3.99, provides about 28.1g of protein per 100g and delivers approximately 477.7 calories, making it a filling and cost-effective option.

Other Reddit users chimed in with alternative budget-friendly protein sources, including tempeh and soya-based tofu.

“Get the soybeans and tempeh starter. Mixing them in batches is much cheaper,” one user suggested.

However, some cautioned against relying too heavily on canned sardines. One user advised against consuming them daily due to potential health risks, such as gout, which can be triggered by high levels of uric acid in the blood.

“You’re probably better off, health-wise, if you mix it up. Sardines tend to accumulate noticeable amounts of heavy metals, which can build up in your system over time,” the user warned.

Another commenter recommended choosing canned sardines without tomato sauce to avoid unnecessary sugar intake.

“I can’t see the full list of ingredients there. If there’s no sugar, then that’s a good brand to go for,” he added.
