KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu police have detained nine women in connection with prostitution activities following three operations conducted last year.
State police chief Datuk Mazli Mazlan said in May 2023, police nabbed two local women who engaged in freelance prostitution in Kuala Terengganu.
“In another case involving a syndicate, seven foreign women - two from Indonesia, one from Laos and four from Thailand - were detained at three budget hotels here on Dec 28 last year,” he told a press conference after the Terengganu Police Contingent Headquarters monthly assembly here today.
He said that all detained foreigners had valid travel permits but three of them were found to have overstayed.
Police investigations revealed that these immoral activities were also prevalent in Kemaman and Dungun and had begun to spread into tourist areas in the state.
As such, police have set up a special task force to prevent such activities from spreading in the state, which is renowned for its tourism sector.
In another development, Mazli said the police are still awaiting the results of the autopsy conducted on the headless corpse found washed up at Rantau Abang beach in Dungun at 5.15 pm yesterday.
District police chief Supt Maizura Abdul Kadir was reported as saying that the deceased, believed to be a man, had died about two weeks ago. -Bernama
