Perak mulls installing CCTV cameras in schools to curb untoward incidents

IPOH: The Perak government will discuss the proposal to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in every school in the state with the Ministry of Education.

State Communications, Multimedia and NGO Committee chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi (pix) said it could provide information and monitor incidents that occur throughout school hours.

He said although the proposal requires significant expenditure, it will be beneficial in the future.

Mohd Azlan said this to reporters after visiting the family of the late Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie at their home, here today.

On Friday (Dec 15), Muhammad Zaharif, 17, a student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jati, died after the motorcycle he was riding was rammed from behind by a car driven by a senior police officer near the school.

Mohd Azlan also urged the public to remove all videos and photos of the incident from social media platforms out of respect for the victim’s family.

He said the committee would cooperate with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to take action against those who continue to spread videos of the incident.

Meanwhile, the political secretary to the Home Minister Johari Kassim gave assurance that the case would be investigated fairly, adding that justice would be upheld.

“I request that all parties refrain from speculating about and sensationalising this incident because it may disrupt the ongoing case,” he added. –Bernama
