Anwar: Freedom of speech must not undermine national unity

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim asserts that freedom of speech is guaranteed but must not override national unity or the rule of law, emphasising mutual respect in a plural society.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has affirmed that freedom of speech is guaranteed in Malaysia.

He stressed, however, that this freedom must not override the interests of national unity and the rule of law.

In a Facebook post, Anwar stated that Malaysia, as a plural society, remains firmly committed to upholding harmony and respecting all sensitivities.

He emphasised that the country must always operate within the bounds of the law.

“Malaysia will only continue to be peaceful and prosperous when all parties firmly uphold the values of mutual respect,” he said.

Anwar added that all must comply with the rules and reject any actions that undermine national harmony.

The Prime Minister shared these remarks alongside a video clip of his speech at a Chinese New Year celebration.

The event was organised by the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM).
