Six men deny charges of armed rioting and causing grievous harm with a meat cleaver and taser in Johor Bahru, granted bail ahead of February hearing.
JOHOR BAHRU: Six individuals have claimed trial to charges of armed rioting and causing grievous harm following an incident at Taman Mount Austin last month.
Choy Soon Chye, 41, Soo Toh Siang, 30, Soh Say Shin, 36, Tan Shen Qi, 21, Yap See Hong, 26, and Calvin Phua Khim Hau, 29, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions and Magistrate Courts here.
They faced charges before Sessions Court Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail and Magistrate Muhammad Fitri Mokhtar.
In the Sessions Court, they were accused of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to Low Chun Yong, 28, using weapons including a meat cleaver and a taser gun.
The alleged offence occurred in front of a restaurant on Jalan Mutiara Emas 2A at 3.30 am on Dec 27.
The charge was framed under Section 326 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum 20-year jail term, a fine, or whipping.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Afdhallan Syafiq Azmy prosecuted the case.
Lawyer T. Haressh represented five of the accused, while counsel Amarpreet Singh Rajwinder Singh represented Calvin Phua.
The Sessions Court granted each accused bail of RM10,000 with one local surety.
They were ordered to surrender their passports and report to the nearest police station.
In the Magistrate’s Court, the six faced a separate charge of rioting while armed with deadly weapons.
This charge, under Section 148 of the Penal Code, carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Bail in the Magistrate’s Court was set at RM3,500 with two sureties for each accused.
The document submission date for both cases has been fixed for Feb 3.
