Customs Dept seize a record 638kg of cannabis flowers worth RM62.5 million from a packaging house in Seri Kembangan, with the drugs believed destined for export.
NILAI: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department has seized a record 638 kilogrammes of cannabis flowers valued at RM62.5 million.
The drugs were discovered during a raid on a double-storey terrace house in Seri Kembangan on Dec 2.
Customs (Enforcement and Compliance) deputy director-general Siti Mang said officers found 17 parcel boxes and several aluminium foil packages containing the suspected cannabis.
She said the house was rented and believed to have been used as a packaging site since September.
“The syndicate’s modus operandi is to place the drugs in bedsheet boxes to avoid detection by authorities,” Siti told a press conference.
The boxes were labelled as ‘Microfibre Bedsheet’ and are believed to have been intended for shipment abroad.
Officers also seized a motorcycle, weighing equipment and a heat-sealing machine from the premises.
No arrests were made as the syndicate members are believed to have fled.
Siti said the house was rented under a foreign national’s name, but local involvement could not be ruled out.
“This is the largest seizure of cannabis flowers recorded this year,” she said, adding that cannabis flowers are more expensive than conventional drugs.
She said the drugs were likely for the international market, with packaging done in Malaysia.
The illicit narcotics may have originated from a neighbouring country, she added.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
