Pahang customs seize RM1.1 million in smuggled e-bikes and rice

Customs foiled two smuggling attempts, seizing banned e-bikes and undeclared rice worth over RM1.1 million in separate operations at Port Klang

TEMERLOH: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department has foiled two smuggling attempts involving electric bicycles and rice worth over RM1.1 million.

Pahang Customs director Mohd Asri Seman said the first seizure involved 434 units of e-bikes worth an estimated RM272,200.

The e-bikes, found in a container at North Port, Port Klang, were falsely declared as various types of bicycles.

“The e-bikes were found to be declared as ‘Bicycle’, ‘Racing Bicycle’ and ‘Kids Bicycle’, but they are banned imported items that require a permit from MITI,” he said.

Duties and taxes evaded on the e-bikes amounted to RM127,981.

In a second raid the same day, customs officers seized two containers declared to be carrying flour.

Inspections revealed rice sacks hidden within the cargo, containing 41,600 kg of rice worth RM832,000.

The containers also held 7,980 kg of rice flour valued at RM23,940.

The total estimated duties and taxes evaded on the rice and flour consignment was RM332,800.

Both cases are being investigated under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967. – Bernama
