Penang MACC expands probe into alleged zakat land purchase

The anti-graft agency will call more individuals for questioning over claims a senior official used tithe funds for a land deal, as the state pledges non-interference.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will call up more individuals to assist its investigation into the alleged abuse of power involving a senior state government official and a land purchase using zakat funds.

Penang MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the move but declined to elaborate as the probe is ongoing.

The investigation was initiated after a state assemblyman raised the issue during a legislative assembly sitting late last year.

The MACC team has already visited several offices to obtain documents and recorded statements from two individuals linked to the case.

The state government has said it will give the MACC space to carry out its investigation without interference.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stated that the state government would not conduct an internal probe while the MACC investigation is underway.
