Terengganu JPJ issues nearly 2,000 CNY summonses

Terengganu JPJ issued 1,946 summonses in a 10-day CNY operation, with 10 road deaths recorded, an increase from the previous year

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued 1,946 summonses during its 10-day Chinese New Year special operation.

The operation, which concluded yesterday, involved inspections of 18,480 vehicles across the state.

Terengganu JPJ director Mohd Zamri Samion said 155 officers were deployed for the enforcement effort.

A total of 1,304 vehicles were penalised for major and technical offences during the checks.

Common offences included expired road tax, no insurance, crossing double lines, and driving without a valid licence.

The department also issued 258 inspection orders and 1,060 other notices during the period.

Officers issued 97 tyre slips and seized 59 vehicles for various violations.

Mohd Zamri revealed that 10 road traffic deaths were recorded during the 2026 CNY operation.

This figure represents an increase of four fatalities compared to the previous year’s operation.

Eight of the ten fatalities involved motorcyclists.

“2026 CNY Op recorded 213 offences involving riders and pillion passengers not wearing helmets,” he said.

He added that this behaviour increases the risk of fatality in the event of an accident.

The director spoke at a press briefing held at the Kuala Terengganu City Council bus terminal.
