IPOH: A three-year-old girl has died after being found unconscious in an unprotected drainage pond near her home in Teluk Intan.
Hilir Perak district police chief ACP Chua Kok Lian said the incident in Simpang 4 Permatang Pelandok was reported to police at around 9.24 pm on Monday (March 23).
Initial investigations indicate the child was found in the pond at approximately 7 pm.
She was taken to Teluk Intan Hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead.
An inspection of the site found the pond had no safety features, such as barriers or covers.
The pond was estimated to be around four feet deep.
The family was tidying up after an event when they noticed the child was missing.
“So far, no criminal activity has been detected, and investigations are continuing, including awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of death,” Chua said in a statement.
He urged parents and guardians to closely supervise children in high-risk areas such as ponds, drains, and ditches.
Chua also called for barriers or safety fences to be installed to prevent similar incidents.
The case has been classified under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001.
