KTMB boosts northern Komuter service with six extra daily trips, shorter peak waits and extended operating hours from Friday.
KUALA LUMPUR: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) will improve the KTM Komuter Northern Sector service schedule starting this Friday to accommodate the increase in passengers and improve travel comfort, especially during peak hours.
KTMB, in a statement today, announced that the improvement involves the addition of six train services per day, namely two for the Padang Besar-Butterworth-Padang Besar route and four for the Ipoh-Butterworth-Ipoh route.
“Currently, 56 services are offered, with the addition of six new services, bringing the total to 62 services per day.
“For the Ipoh-Butterworth route, the waiting time during the morning peak has also been reduced to 55 minutes compared to more than 120 minutes previously,” the statement said.
KTMB has also extended the operating hours of the last train to provide more travel options for passengers.
The statement said the Ipoh-Butterworth route last train departs at 7.45 pm compared to 6.35 pm currently, while the last train for the Butterworth-Ipoh route will depart at 8.10 pm compared to 7.10 pm previously.
“The waiting time for passengers on the Padang Besar-Butterworth route during the evening peak will be reduced to 30 minutes compared to 60 minutes previously.
“This schedule improvement is expected to benefit approximately 20,000 passengers per day or 7.3 million passengers per year, especially those commuting for work, education and daily business along the KTM Komuter Northern Sector service corridor,” the statement said.
KTMB said the initiative is in line with its commitment to strengthening the national rail transport system and supporting the government’s aspirations through the Road to Rail agenda which encourages more people to switch from using private vehicles to public transport as a daily mobility option.
