Penang plans waste-to-energy project to tackle pig farm odour

Penang plans a waste-to-energy project in Tasek Gelugor to address long-standing foul odour issues from pig farming, replicating a successful pilot in Valdor.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state government plans to implement a Waste-to-Energy (WTE) project as a long-term solution to foul odour issues from pig farming in Kampung Selamat, Tasek Gelugor.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the initiative is modelled on a successful pilot project in Valdor, Seberang Perai Selatan. He stated that the Valdor project, run in collaboration with an environmental company, has shown positive results after three years of continuous effort.

“The project enables pig farm sewage waste to be treated and converted into energy, thereby reducing odour emissions and environmental pollution,” Chow told reporters. He confirmed odour, gas and waste emissions in Valdor are now under better control.

Chow was responding to recent protests by hundreds of residents from housing estates and villages around Tasek Gelugor. The residents protested against pig farming activities in Kampung Selamat, which have allegedly polluted Sungai Kreh for over 40 years.

He noted that a previous attempt to implement a pilot project with an environmental company at the Kampung Selamat farms had failed to produce satisfactory results. Following this, the State Executive Council meeting decided to adopt the same approach and technology used in Valdor to resolve the issue.

The Chief Minister announced the plan after the handing over of mock cheques for the state government’s 2026 allocation to missionary schools at Komtar.

Commerce.Asia backs rise of creator-led brands with scalable execution model

Commerce.Asia executive chairman Ganesh Kumar Bangah said consumer trust is shifting away from traditional brands and increasingly toward creators, communities and personal relationships, driving the rapid rise of influencer-led businesses. However, he stressed that while launching a brand is easier today, scaling sustainably requires operational discipline, supply chain control, reliable fulfilment and structured capital planning. Speaking at the launch of vegan beauty brand Numinara by actress Diana Danielle, Ganesh said the brand’s RM1 million sales milestone in under six months highlights how creator-driven demand can translate into long-term growth when backed by strong execution and infrastructure.
