King: Bahasa Melayu must remain primary education language

Sultan Ibrahim stresses national language vital for unity, calls for security laws against 3R threats

PETALING JAYA: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, stressed that Bahasa Melayu must remain the country’s primary language and that any new education system must align with the National Education Policy.

In his Royal Address at the opening of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament, the king said any recognised education system must also accept the Malay language and Malaysian history.

“If anyone does not accept the Malay language, it would be better for them not to live in Malaysia,” His Majesty said, highlighting the national language’s role in shaping identity, unity and the country’s future.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong also emphasised the need to strengthen the national education system as a builder of national character and the nation’s long-term development.

Beyond education, His Majesty warned that Malaysia faces modern threats to digital security, information integrity, and the rise of deepfake technology, which could enable fraud and undermine social stability.

The king said threats from serious crime and violence, as well as issues touching on race, religion and royalty – known as the 3R issues – must be addressed effectively.

“Therefore, laws related to national security and external threats should be enacted without delay.

“Only in this way can harmony among all communities and national sovereignty be continuously preserved,” the King said.

The king also welcomed efforts to strengthen election laws, democratic institutions and political financing, including initiatives to limit the Prime Minister’s term to two terms, or ten years.

His Majesty called for reforms such as separating the roles of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor, and introducing a Freedom of Information Act and an Ombudsman to ensure transparency and accountability in governance.
