Malaysia’s housing ministry unveils new design parameters for public spaces to better accommodate individuals with autism, ADHD and other neurodivergent conditions

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Housing and Local Government is introducing new parameters in its revised building code to make residential and public spaces more accommodating for neurodivergent individuals.

Deputy Minister Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu (pic) said the revised Draft MS 1184:2025 includes measures for people with conditions like autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Key features include the creation of designated calming spaces in public areas. These would be soundproof safe rooms with dim lighting to help individuals de-escalate during sensory overload.

“Sensory management is also a key focus,” Aiman Athirah told the Dewan Negara. This includes minimising the use of flickering fluorescent lights and replacing them with natural light or dimmable LEDs.

Acoustic and visual controls are also essential components of the new guidelines. The parameters involve using low-arousal colours like pastels and muting patterns on floors and walls.

She emphasised these measures would reduce excessive stimuli that cause discomfort or stress. The deputy minister was responding to a query from Senator Manolan Mohamad.

He had requested details on new standards to ensure housing and public environments are truly friendly for neurodivergent individuals.
