Malaysian safety body demands action after student’s sickle death

MSOSH calls for probe and strict action after a student was killed by an exposed sickle carried on a motorcycle in Teluk Intan.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH) has demanded a thorough investigation and firm action following a fatal incident in Teluk Intan.

A 17-year-old vocational college student died after being struck by a long-handled sickle carried by another motorcyclist.

MSOSH president Datuk Wira Ahmad Fakhrul Anuar Ismail said the tragedy highlighted a clear failure in safe work practices. He stated that negligence of this nature is completely unacceptable.

“If there was indeed an element of negligence in the conduct of work operations, the authorities, particularly the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), must take strict action against the employer and the employees involved,” he said.

Ahmad Fakhrul emphasised that the incident was preventable with proper safety controls during work operations. He added that the victim’s family has the right to consider legal action if negligence is proven.

The incident also demonstrates that safety awareness remains insufficient despite previous campaigns. Ahmad Fakhrul stressed that awareness efforts must expand to sectors like agriculture and landscaping that frequently use sharp tools.

He advised the public to use protective covers for blades and avoid transporting sharp equipment exposed. Safer transportation methods for hazardous equipment are also crucial to minimise accident risks.

“MSOSH also extends its condolences to the victim’s family and hopes that this incident will serve as a serious reminder for all parties to prioritise safety in every activity,” he said.

The student, Adham Faisal, died at the scene from severe neck injuries after the motorcycles came into close proximity.
