The Paris Court of Appeal has annulled a USD14.9 billion award against Malaysia, a major victory for national sovereignty and Sabah’s interests
KOTA KINABALU: The recent decision by the Paris Court of Appeal to annul the “Final Award” to the self-proclaimed heirs of the Sulu Sultanate is a significant triumph for Malaysia’s sovereignty.
Sook assemblyman Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup said the ruling safeguards the nation’s strategic assets.
He told the Sabah State Assembly the success demonstrates close cooperation between the state and federal governments.
“This decision not only upholds the country’s legal sovereignty, but also protects Malaysia’s economic interests and strategic assets, especially in Sabah,” he said.
Arthur said the victory resulted from the firm, professional, and consistent efforts of the country’s legal team.
The Paris Court of Appeal ruled on December 9 that arbitrator Gonzalo Stampa lacked jurisdiction in the case.
The court established that no valid arbitration agreement bound Malaysia to the proceedings.
The annulled Final Award had involved a claim of USD14.9 billion against Malaysia.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said hailed the victory as a triumph for the dignity and rights of all Malaysians.
She described the ruling as a significant achievement for the entire nation.
The Sulu Special Secretariat War Room confirmed the court’s decision on behalf of the Malaysian government.
The official judgment was received early on the morning of December 10. – Bernama
