U Mobile has blocked over 265 million scam calls and fraudulent SMS attempts using advanced network-level firewall technology as of December 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: U Mobile Sdn Bhd has blocked more than 265 million scam calls and fraudulent SMS attempts nationwide.
The telecommunications company achieved this through full-scale network-level scam protection across its 4G and 5G networks as of December 2025.
In a joint statement, U Mobile and technology partner Cellusys said the initiative uses advanced firewall technology.
This system screens all inbound calls and SMS at the network level to prevent suspicious communications from reaching customers.
“The solution has protected U Mobile customers from scam calls impersonating authorities and institutions, SMS phishing attacks (smishing), spoofed or manipulated caller identities and high-volume criminal campaigns targeting Malaysian consumers,” they said.
U Mobile chief technology officer Woon Ooi Yuen said embedding the advanced scam protection reflects the telco’s commitment to safeguarding customers.
“We will continue to improve our network through technology to better protect customers across voice, messaging and data services,” he said.
Woon added that security remains a core priority as the company expands its 5G network nationwide.
Cellusys chief executive officer Brendan Cleary said U Mobile’s deployment sets a benchmark for scam prevention in Malaysia and the wider region.
“This deployment demonstrates what can be achieved when operators commit to proven, real-world defences rather than future roadmaps,” he said.
The statement cited Global Anti-Scam Alliance findings that 73% of Malaysians have reported experiencing scam calls or fraudulent SMS.
This is among the highest rates in Southeast Asia, with criminal groups increasingly targeting households, senior citizens, and vulnerable individuals.
