PM Anwar dismisses talk of Nurul Izzah as next Selangor MB

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says there were no discussions about Nurul Izzah Anwar replacing Amirudin Shari as Selangor Menteri Besar.

JOHANNESBURG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed speculation about PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar taking over as Selangor Menteri Besar.

“That is his view,” Anwar said when asked about Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari’s suggestion that Nurul Izzah succeed him.

“He never discussed it with me.”

Amirudin had earlier stated he conveyed the proposal to Nurul Izzah, leaving the decision to her.

Regarding the Gombak MP’s potential federal duties, Anwar noted elections were still distant.

“When is the election? Still a long way to go… we will discuss later,” he said.

The prime minister remained non-committal about a possible Cabinet reshuffle.

“A reshuffle is to fill vacancies,” Anwar quipped during a dinner with the Malaysian diaspora.

“Can you suggest some names? I will consider.”

On suggestions that Amirudin was ready for a federal role, he noted there were multiple positions available.

“That is only one position,” Anwar said.

“There are three vacancies, at least.”

During a question-and-answer session, Anwar supported establishing a Centre for African Studies.

“I will certainly take it up,” he said of the proposal.

“It is a good proposal.”

He noted Malaysia understood European and American history but knew less about Africa’s 54 countries and Latin America.

Anwar said the business community should lead Malaysian investment in Africa.

“The government’s role is to encourage and facilitate,” he stated.

Earlier, he urged Malaysians abroad to maintain high standards and share knowledge.

“Do your very best,” Anwar said in his speech.

“We must also be committed to disseminating what is right, what is true and what is just.” – Bernama
