Sabah PH pledges new dam construction as long-term solution to water crisis affecting Kota Kinabalu and surrounding areas in state election manifesto
KOTA KINABALU: The proposed construction of a new dam has emerged as a key commitment in Sabah Pakatan Harapan’s election manifesto to address the state’s persistent water crisis.
Sabah DAP chairman Datok Phoong Jin Zhe described the initiative as crucial for resolving long-standing water shortages affecting Kota Kinabalu and surrounding regions.
“The entire Kota Kinabalu City has been suffering from the water shortage issue and crisis for the past many years,” Phoong told reporters after launching the coalition’s manifesto.
He emphasized that residents deserve reliable water supply to support future industrial and residential development.
The dam proposal forms one of 10 priority commitments under seven agendas in PH’s ‘Komitmen Pakatan Harapan Sabah’ manifesto.
Phoong acknowledged the project requires thorough evaluation including strict Environmental Impact Assessment compliance.
He stressed such infrastructure represents essential long-term solutions to prevent recurring water crises.
Rapid development in Kota Kinabalu demands proactive measures to ensure water resource sustainability according to the coalition.
PH is contesting 21 of 73 state seats in the November 29 election with 12 PKR candidates, eight from DAP and one from Amanah.
Early voting will take place on November 25 ahead of the main polling day. – Bernama
