PKR mobilises Sarawak grassroots ahead of state election

PKR national leaders urge Sarawak branches to fully activate party machinery as state polls loom.

KUCHING: National PKR leaders have directed the party’s Sarawak chapter to fully activate its ground-level operations in anticipation of the upcoming Sarawak State Election, which is widely expected to be called in the coming months.

Speaking at the Sarawak PKR Convention in Kuching, party vice president Datuk Seri R. Ramanan called on all divisions — including communications, transportation, and ground campaigning units — to begin operating at full capacity without delay.

“Every unit at the branch and grassroots level must be mobilised immediately. This must involve all components of the party machinery. We are aiming for a decisive victory in Sarawak, one that upholds justice for ordinary Malaysians,” he said.

The convention was presided over by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to championing equitable wealth distribution and ensuring that the Sarawak electorate has a stronger voice in decisions affecting their livelihoods.

According to sources familiar with the ruling coalition’s plans, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is considering dissolving the State Legislative Assembly shortly after the month-long Gawai Dayak celebrations in June, potentially setting the stage for polls in July or early August.

The current assembly term is due to expire on December 18 this year.

“The political climate in Sarawak is sufficiently stable for GPS to secure a strong majority.

Calling the election during or just after Gawai would also tap into the festive sentiment among Dayak communities, who make up the largest voting bloc in the state,” the source noted.

GPS is also reported to be ramping up constituency-level development projects backed by significant financial commitments ahead of the anticipated election period.

Of the 82 state seats currently in the assembly, GPS holds 80, with the remaining two — Padungan and Pending — held by Sarawak DAP.
