“When we see prices in neighbouring countries and Europe reaching RM10-RM13 per litre, only then do we see the reality. Thankful that Malaysia remains competitive for the sake of the people.”

KUALA LUMPUR: The government’s decision to maintain the retail price of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre, despite the global market facing uncertainty in crude oil prices, has received a positive response from the public.

Most Malaysians consider the implementation of targeted subsidies through the BUDI MADANI initiative as clear evidence of the government’s commitment and concern in protecting the welfare of the people from the impact of the international geopolitical crisis following the conflict between Iran and the United States.

Various social media platforms are filled with expressions of gratitude from netizens who are relieved because their cost of living burden remains unaffected and the continuous commitment provided by the government, despite the crisis affecting West Asia.

A user on X, Nazril_Iznil, in his post, said that the public should be grateful for the steps taken by the government in handling the situation, especially when other countries have to pay more for petrol.

“Sometimes we forget how significant the value of the petrol subsidy we enjoy every day is. When we see prices in neighbouring countries and Europe reaching RM10-RM13 per litre, only then do we see the reality. Thankful that Malaysia remains competitive for the sake of the people,” he said.

Meanwhile, Threads user shereenomt expressed pride in the comments section, stating that the subsidy provided has helped save money while spending.

“I’m even more proud and thankful today. I went to pump petrol and did not realise that prices went up to RM3.27 per litre. I had saved over RM44 with the subsidy. Imagine how much more the government would have made without giving us the subsidy. Why can’t people be more positive and thankful?,” the user said.

Threads user amitooniche described the announcement made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday as appropriate for the current situation and timely, but expressed disappointment that it had been misinterpreted by some parties.

“The war affects oil prices, and expensive fuel affects manufacturing, transportation and logistics, so the price of goods will increase as well.

“If people ignore the advice, spend extravagantly, many of these people will complain about being broke and start demanding the government for help or contributions,” the user said.
