Rafizi urges DAP to act on Azam Baki as rally pressures Anwar, while Lim backs Parliament debate before March 2026
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Rafizi Ramli yesterday urged members of the government, particularly DAP MPs, to take a clear stand on the Azam Baki issue without delay.
“Don’t wait until June. If you wait until June to signal to Anwar, by then DAP could face consequences in the next election,” Rafizi said at the “Tangkap Azam Baki” rally yesterday.
Previously, in December, DAP had said that if Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim fails to deliver meaningful reforms within the next six months, the party will reassess its role in the government.
Rafizi added that Anwar is most concerned about DAP’s stance.
“To DAP, this is my last reminder: Anwar Ibrahim’s main concern is DAP. He does not worry about Amanah or PKR.
“If DAP speaks up, he will think twice. My message to DAP: don’t wait until June.
“If you wait until June to send a message to the Prime Minister, and if Anwar continues to defend Azam Baki in this manner, DAP could be wiped out in the next general election.”
Speaking to rally-goers, the Pandan MP stressed the importance of persistent pressure in driving reform.
“We have learned that only through persistent pressure—nagging for more than 20 years—did we become the government. We know the power of nagging and pressure,” he added.
Meanwhile, former DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said in a statement yesterday that he stands by a Pakatan Harapan (PH) Presidential Council statement issued on Jan 12, 2022, when he was party chief.
The PH Presidential Council had then called for Azam and two others to be suspended over a shareholding controversy to allow for an independent investigation.
“At that time, Tan Sri Azam was involved in a similar shareholding controversy over his ownership of 1.93 million shares in Gets Global Bhd (formerly KBES Bhd) as of April 30, 2015, worth about RM772,000.”
Lim noted that Azam is now facing a fresh controversy after Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) records allegedly showed that he had held 17.7 million shares in Velocity Capital Partner Bhd and about 4.52 million shares in Awanbiru Technology Bhd at some point last year.
“As suggested by the PH Presidential Council in 2022, I agree that this issue should be debated again as a specific motion in Parliament before the current session ends on March 3, 2026,” he added.
The “Tangkap Azam Baki” rally yesterday was held to protest against Azam and to call for his suspension. About 1,000 people attended, including several MPs, demanding accountability over the allegations.
