French President Macron proposes a Paris G7 summit to Trump, offering to invite Ukraine, Russia, Denmark and Syria on the sidelines.
PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron (pic) has sent a private message to Donald Trump offering to organise a G7 summit in Paris on Thursday.
A source close to Macron confirmed the offer, which also proposes inviting Ukraine, Russia, Denmark and Syria to meet on the sidelines.
The message was posted by Trump on his Truth Social network.
In it, Macron suggests the meeting could take place on Thursday afternoon after the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
“My friend, we are completely aligned on Syria. We can do great things in Iran. I don’t understand what you are doing in Greenland,” Macron wrote in the message.
The offer comes as Europe considers its response to Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on eight European countries.
He issued the threat in an attempt to pressure the EU over the territory of Greenland.
Relations between the two leaders deteriorated further on Monday.
Trump then threatened 200% tariffs on French wine over France’s intention to decline an invitation to join his “Board of Peace”.
A source close to Macron said “tariff threats to influence our foreign policy are unacceptable and ineffective”.
