Philippines VP Sara Duterte declares 2028 presidential bid

Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte announces her 2028 presidential run, escalating her feud with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. whom she accuses of corruption.

MANILA: Vice President Sara Duterte has declared her intention to run for president of the Philippines in 2028.

Her announcement escalates a bitter public feud with incumbent President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

“I offer my life, my strength, and my future in the service of our nation,” Duterte said.

She added, “I am Sara Duterte. I will run for president of the Philippines.”

In her speech, she accused Marcos of corruption and failing to honour campaign promises.

Duterte claimed she saw Marcos’s “lack of sincerity” regarding his sworn duties within the first few months of their terms.

The two politicians had formed an alliance that led to a landslide victory in the 2022 presidential election.

Duterte, the daughter of former president Rodrigo Duterte, was impeached by the House of Representatives last year.

The country’s Supreme Court later threw out the case over procedural issues.

A new impeachment complaint was filed against her by members of the clergy earlier this month.

It was the third such complaint to target the vice president in just over a week.

Under the Philippine constitution, an impeachment triggers a trial in the Senate.

A guilty verdict would see Duterte barred from holding public office and prevent her 2028 presidential run.
