US and Syrian soldiers wounded in shooting during joint patrol

Shots fired at a joint US-Syrian military delegation in Palmyra wound several soldiers, marking a first since last year’s regime change.

PALMYRA: Several American and Syrian soldiers were wounded when shots were fired at a joint military delegation in central Syria on Saturday.

State news agency SANA reported the incident occurred during a joint patrol in the historic city of Palmyra.

It quoted a security source stating “several members of the American forces” and “two members of the Syrian security forces” were injured.

The agency reported the shooter was killed at the scene.

Helicopters evacuated the wounded to the Tanf base in southern Syria, where US troops are stationed.

This is the first such incident reported since Islamist-led forces overthrew longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December last year.

The new government has since rekindled ties with the United States.

Last month, during President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s visit to Washington, Damascus formally joined the US-led global coalition against the Islamic State group.

Palmyra was once under the control of the Islamic State militant group.
